Corporate Social Responsibility

Overview

The spirit of sharing and caring has always been an integral part of PUB’s culture. We believe in being responsible corporate citizens who make a difference to society. We focus our Corporate Social Responsiblity (CSR) efforts in four areas as detailed in our CSR framework.

Corporate Social Responsibility Framework

Corporate Philanthropy

PUB’s employees have been contributing to the SHARE programme since 1986 and are firm supporters of the Community Chest (ComChest). In recognition of our long-standing commitment, ComChest awarded PUB its highest honour - the Pinnacle Award, in 2007.

PUB has also been a supporter of the Vertical Challenge - an annual fundraiser organised by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, and PUB. Through active staff participation and generous donations, the Vertical Challenge raises funds for beneficiaries of the President’s Challenge.

Community Volunteering

PUB adopts a focused approach to community volunteering by building long-term working relationships one charity at a time. Previous collaborations include the Singapore Children’s Society (2004 to 2007) and the PEACE-Connect Neighbourhood Link (2007 to 2012).

Since 2013, PUB adopted Metta Welfare Association as our official adopted charity. The Metta Welfare Association is a secular organisation which provides special education, welfare services, community and medical care for some 1,000 beneficiaries across different races and religions. They have a broad spectrum of beneficiaries ranging from preschoolers, primary school children and youths with special needs, to the elderly and terminally ill. Some of the activities organised jointly by Metta and PUB include batik and pottery sessions with the Metta Alumni, bi-monthly birthday celebrations at the Metta Preschool, spring cleaning of homes and outings for children/elderly.

We also embarked on a Water Conservation@Metta project whereby we shared our water conservation expertise with Metta staff and installed water-saving devices across the nine Metta welfare centres located island-wide. The objectives are to reduce water demand across Metta centres and to maximise the value of every dollar raised.

Responsible Business Practices

In carrying out its usual business operations, PUB believes in being responsible to both - the environment and its stakeholders. At the workplace, PUB staffs adopt simple yet practical eco-office practices, thereby conserving resources. For this effort, PUB has been awarded the Green Office Label by the Singapore Environment Council since 2007.

PUB protects staff and stakeholders by minimising their health and safety risks, putting in place the OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System. To further entrench the value of health, safety, security and emergency preparedness, PUB established a dedicated unit – Health & Security, Safety & Emergency Planning Unit, to look into and address related issues and risks. PUB’s Safety Day is also held annually to share best safety practices, as well as the latest safety and health equipment.

Recognising that PUB’s operations will inevitably affect the environment in one way or another, PUB is mindful to minimise the adverse impact of its operations. To this end, we established the operationalised ISO 14000/14001 Environment Management System for all key installations.

International Responsibility

In times of crisis, PUB has been quick to render assistance to other countries. In 2004, PUB raised funds and delivered about 3,000 water bags to victims of the South Asian tsunami, and shipped a desalination unit to the Maldives. PUB staff also rallied together to fill over 3,500 water bags for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines in Nov 2013.

PUB volunteers have also taken our cause of ensuring water sustainability for all to communities in need outside Singapore. Since 2013, PUB organised two overseas expeditions to the Nam Cuong Commune in Northern Vietnam with Mercy Relief, and the Ban Kok Wan Village in Laos with YMCA. During the expeditions, our volunteers have come together to design and install RO (Reverse Osmosis) systems, laid and installed water pipes for new water sources and conducted outreach programmes educating on the importance of hygiene and water quality. Over 1,300 villagers and children have benefited from our outreach efforts.
